Application of Ozone/UV Process for Treatment of Contaminated Drinking Water

Abstract
Drinking water contamination by industrial and agricultural chemicals is now an issue of international concern. Ozone has received considerable attentions lately as an oxidant to destroy organic contaminants. In principle, ozone should be able to oxidize most organic substances to carbon dioxide and water. In actuality, ozone is quite selective in its oxidation reactions. To overcome the limitation of ozone and enhance its effectiveness in the oxidation of organics, ozone combined with ultravilot radiation process have been proposed. This process involes the generation of the hydroxyl radical (OH), a very reactive intermediate that has far greater oxidizing power than ozone, and the direct potholysis reaction. Result of this study indicate that ozone/UV process accelerate the removal rate of TCE and PCE by ozone. In future, this process might be used as a cost - effective treatment process for controlling the common chlorinated organics in small scale.
